Voluntary Services

The primary task to the Voluntary Services Dept is to facilitate the recruitment and placement of Volunteers, to support the work of Redbridge Health Care Trust and to provide ongoing support for Volunteers and the departments in which they are placed. The department provides a framework for formally recruiting, training, supporting and developing Volunteers.

Recruitment is achieved by adverting in local newspapers, word of mouth, contact with local voluntary agencies and presentations to local groups within the Borough.

Training is ongoing within the are of voluntary work after initial training on essential such as wheelchair handling, minibus test, fire procedure and Health & Safety guidelines.

Support is continuous by regular contact with volunteers, support meeting, social events and newsletters.

Development of volunteers is an integral part of the growth of the department, enabling us to forge links with new area within the Trust and initiate new projects – thus ‘building bridges for the future’

Daily Newspapers – this is often the first non-nursing person the Residents/Patients see at the start of the day – an ideal opportunity for a chat about the news.

Ward Visitors – volunteers visit Residents/Patients who share the same hobbies or culture which can lead to a supportive friendship.

Residents/Patients Clubs – open daily and evenings for Arts, Crafts, Quizzes, Lunch, Afternoon Teas and Sports. Residents Club has a 1930’s environments where the Volunteers can share their skills and have the opportunity to learn new ones.

Trolley/Shop – this service gives the Residents/Patients the opportunity of choice and also keeping up with current prices.

Outings – day and afternoon trips to the Theatre, Pub, Seaside etc.

Entertainment – fun time for everyone Residents/Patients and Volunteers alike are entertained by professional artists: Sing-a-long, Country & Western, Magic etc.

Fund Raising – attic sales, jumble sales quiz nights, barn dances and discos enjoyed by staff, residents and volunteers.

Religious Services/Festivals Church Services for all denominations – other Religious Festivals are celebrated as they occur.

Board Games/Quizzes – a relaxed way to spend an hour or tow over a cup of tea.

Translation Services – for those Residents where English is not their first language.

Drivers – driving own car or Voluntary Services mini bus to the park, theatre, seaside, shopping or home for the day.

Communication skills – speech therapy achieved in a relaxed way over a cup of tea, a board game or playing cards.

Office – volunteers give general office support to the Voluntary Services Manager in areas such as typing, photocopying, answering the phone and filing.

Reception/Welcoming – volunteers work on a rota basis on reception directing and helping visitors and out patients in the General Hospital.

Accident & Emergency – in conjunction with the League of Jewish Women volunteers assist the staff by helping waiting patients.

Hospital Radio – run by volunteers and broadcasts seven days a week to both Goodmayes and King George Hospitals. The radio volunteers also provide entertainment for Residents/Patients.

Community Clubs – social groups in the Community where clients and Volunteers meet to play board games, bingo, outings etc and enjoy a meal together.

Home visiting – clients who have not attended groups/activities for some time may need the support of a Volunteer to encourage them to “join in” again.

Relatives Support – carers sometimes need a “listening ear and a cup of tea” when they pop in to collect their relative.

Library/Video Club – there are many activities for patients in the Library such as Creative Writing, Numeracy Group and Back to Work Workshop.

Garden Centre – staff, volunteers and patients enjoy the outdoor life together and sell their produce in the Hospital, at fetes in the local area.

Work Skills – staff, volunteers and patients working together in ‘work’ environment.
