TRUST PROFILE

Redbridge Health Care became an NHS Trust in April 1993 and combines Acute, Community and Mental Health, Learning Disabilities and Continuing Care for the Elderly Services.

Redbridge is situated in the North East of London within half hour of London Docklands, City Airport and the city itself via road, train or tube. Access to the Essex and Hertford countryside is excellent using the M25 and A12.

Approx. 1 in 5 of the population we serve are from an ethnic minority, with half of these being from the Indian sub continent.

Service Profile

The Trust is divided for operational purposes into three Service areas: Acute; Community, Learning Disabilities and Therapy Services; and Mental Health and Continuing Care of the Elderly with good links between the three.

ACUTE SERVICES are based at King George Hospital opened in 1993, having 482 acute beds with all the major specialties one would expect of a large DGH. The A&E department is one of the busiest in the country with some 78,000 attenders being seen.

COMMUNITY HEALTH SERVICES aim to provide locally based medical, nursing and therapy services to certain targeted client groups in a way that, with other agencies providing social care, the needs of individuals will be properly assessed and met.

LEARNING DISABILITY SERVICES provides specialised assessment, support, advice and treatment for people with learning disabilities and their carers. The multi-disciplinary team responsible for people with learning disabilities is based at Chadwell Heath Hospital, providing a clinical service aimed at maximising an individuals' independence.

MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES are based at Goodmayes Hospital next to King George and meet the needs of Mental Health clients through a wide range of services in hospital and community settings. The adult services cover the age range 16 - 65 and the elderly services those aged 65+. There are a number of continuing care and assessment wards in Goodmayes Hospital but increasingly work is carried out in the community and specialist units with multi-disciplinary teams, there is also a child & family consultation service that addresses the mental health needs of young people and their families. Services for the Mentally Ill are being re-provided with clients being repatriated to their local areas and the eventual closure of Goodmayes envisaged by the year 2000. It is planned to open new unit accommodation on the Goodmayes site once the hospital has closed.

ELDERLY CARE services are provided at Barking Hospital with 116 acute/rehabilitation beds and Chadwell Heath with 60 beds for Continuing Care.

Organisational Structure

The Executive Management Team comprises the Chief Executive, Director of Operations, Director of Finance, Director of Nursing & Quality and Medical Director with the Director of Estates & Human Resources and Director of Corporate Development being co-opted members.
