What are your key messages that you would like to promote about your ward/service?
The out patients department exists to give an efficient and caring service to all patients referred to its clinic. It is the shop window of the hospital and therefore very important as for a large number of patients it is the first and possible the only part of the hospital that they see. Their opinion of the hospital as a whole may well be coloured by the reception they receive from the out-patient staff and the treatment given there.

It is extremely important that the service provided should be efficient, friendly and prompt. Neither age, class, sex, race culture of sexual preference should affect the quality of care received by any of our patients or their relatives. Many people feel frightened and intimidated by the hospital atmosphere and need a great deal of support and reassurance. The patients’ welbeing must be paramount at all times.

The clinic nurse is the link between patient and Doctor and other members of the multi-disciplinary team. As well as providing a high standard of care she must be aware that the patient will turn to her, not only for support and reassurance, but also for explanation and information. It is essential that he should understand the instructions regarding his treatment and further investigations and it is the clinic nurses’ duty to see that he is conversant with these before he leaves the hospital. She must counsel and teach him and he must go home feeling that he is welcome to phone the out-patient staff for advice, should he feel unsure of the instructions given to him.
