Brookside is a specialist tier 4 psychiatric service to adolescents, providing in-patient, day and out-patient assessment and treatment, as well as education and consultation to the wider professional network. At present there are 14 residential and up to 6 day places. Who are your customers? Young people of both sexes aged 13-19 years at the time of referral. Most of the young people admitted to Brookside come into the category of mixed emotional conduct disorders. There are a varying number of young people who present with OCD, depressive disorders or psychotic conditions. In the latter, usually once the acute episode is well controlled. A number of young people come from families where there is a long history of abuse, physical and sexual, and neglect. Some have already spent long periods in residential care and in the child care system. All referrals are made by Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrists from the tier 3 district services.
