Clinical BiochemistryKing George Hospital was opened in 1993, newly built in the grounds of Goodmayes psychiatric hospital. It is two storeys high with a pleasant outlook. The grounds are situated by the main A12 route linking London to the East. The hospital serves a population of 230,000, with an annual Accident and Emergency workload of 78,000 attendances (April 1998 - February 1999 figures). We also serve over 100 GP practices. Managerially, Pathology is part of a directorate within the Acute unit, comprising Pathology, Radiology and Pharmacy. The Consultant Microbiologist is currently the Directorate Manager and is supported by a shared business manager. The laboratory is spacious, and located in the main part of the hospital, adjacent to Haematology. It deals with 144,000 requests (over 1.3 million tests) each year. U&Es, LFTs and other general chemistries are handled by twin Hitachi 911 analysers. These are five years old and will be replaced in the next 2 years. We have a one year old Bayer Immuno*1 for our immunoassay, and a Mira-S for small batch analyses. The hospital has five Corning blood gas analysers (4 are Extra-Laboratory in SCBU, ITU, AE and the Labour Ward) which we maintain and QA on a daily basis. The department is headed by a Consultant Biochemist (Top Grade), Mike Waterson MCB MRCPath supported by a Principal and Senior. Technical staff are managed by a Head Biomedical Scientist (MLSO4), Len Kemp FIBMS with day-to-day management carried out by a Chief (MLSO3). We organise our laboratory into Sections, each one supervised by a Section leader, who may be the Chief, Senior Biochemist or MLSO2*** There are seven state registered MLSOs who rotate monthly through the sections, supported by three MLAs (one part time) two part-time data entry clerks two general office clerks handling enquiries and a receptionist. One of the MLSO posts is currently filled by a Trainee All together we are 21 people ( just over 16 whole time equivalents)
